Shimri: Lilies of the Field

(Art of Fact - 2000)

Old-school electronic activities are pumped up with more-modern beats and unexpected twists...

Semi-dark Lilies of the Field is the synthmusic epic from Shimri (Mentallo and the Fixer's leadman-gone-solo, a.k.a. Gary Dassing).

Sputtering with rhythmic energies, the burbling electronics of Pyrolcastic Flows (7:57) take higher and lower routes; the former in glassy, late-80s-ish trills and the latter in sweeping drones and gothic overtones. With darkly percolating synthsounds reminiscent of early Depeche Mode (though more experimentally arranged) Retrograde Motions chimes and echoes backed by peppy e-percussion and mechanical glints. Decorated with lighter swirls and spooky industrial touches, Chrysalis opens to reveal metallic patter and assorted sci-fi-esque sounds.

Hints of tribal and a little funk, even, are woven into short-though-potent electrosequences of Vendetta (2:56). Aggressive Time of the End is pummeled with percussive eruptions while spewing forth a torrential stream of sounds and samples. The softer bubbles of Continents Adrift are topped with sparse shimmers and underpinned by clattery beats.

Twisted-yet-tuneful, the atmospherics-layered web of Deceit features finger-tangling leads, chipper bleeps and beats. The disc ends on a groovy note... which lies several feet under Buried Truths's blipping, sweeping and syncopating techno-strata.

Several URLs are given in the liner notes, though the only one currently working is http://www.mentallo.8m.com/.

In just over an hour, Shimri's dozen instrumental tracks harken back to earlier e-music sounds, yet propel them into a shadowy future through edgy sonic experiments. Spirited synth expressions make 8.3 Lilies of the Field an ought-to-hear disc, especially for synthmusic fanatics who like a little bite in their electrotunes. 8-3.gif
