Steve Roach: Light Fantastic

(Fathom - 1999)

Always ready to explore new territories, Steve Roach aims his gear for the electron-filled atmosphere surrounding the sun itself. He receives a little help in the fractal-groove department from Vir Unis, who you may recall co-piloted on another of Roach's recent journeys, Body Electric. (Additionally, Vidna Obmana contributes sample fuel for this outing). Get ready for take-off as we trip into the Light Fantastic.

A steadily churning rhythm and submerged bass is the first thing heard upon beginning to Trip the Light. Soon, Roach's trademark synthsounds sweep underneath, lifting the entire proceedings and forging ahead. When the track fades, a barely perceptible shift signals the influx of new atmospheres; swirling in multi-hued cyclonic flows, Breathing the Pulse (5:24) is lighter, airier. The rhythmic lifeforce pounds then fades away, leaving sweltering vapors which lead directly into...

The Reflecting Chamber, where the mists are injected with flutey rasps and buzzingly metallic strands (must be the fujara samples contributed by VO) which are soon backed by a low, bubbling throb of neo-primitive percusssion. Higher tones rush in at the track's end, an upward current streaming with dazzling clarity, revealing Touch the Pearl. Swiftly swishing sibilants seem to propel the sonic fluid which blurs as it passes, a continual zoom of unidentifiable elements. As if from far below, deeper, sparser beats further accent the tubular soundshape, which eventually becomes more translucent, exposing the empowering rythmics within, before all fades as the entities move on to distant stars.

Electrically charged cloudforms hover and swirl at the entrance to the Realm of Refraction; blazing strands of synth-radiance pierce the rolling fog and a steadily pounding beat pattern emerges. In a dense dance of magical interplay, shimmering streams encircle amorphous tones, and are counterpointed by actively wandering percussion. Finally exhausted, everything calms to a thinner, slower state, luxuriously lulling in its own radiant afterglow. This subdued zone soon is peppered with light, sporadic beats and new gusts of Roach's solar winds, merging into The Luminous Return (16:48). Warm, gentle star breezes spiral toward the heavens, offshooting rays which become galaxies unto themselves, evolving within the percolating clouds of this fantastic soundspace. Rhythmic accompaniment fades away as the lightshow continues, softly shapeshifting, enjoined by rich drones, buzzing constellations and other encounters in a spacious nightsky.

It's great to hear something new coming out of Fathom, and that much the better that it's Steve Roach. Light Fantastic takes its listeners far away for an hour, as Roach's years of experience are applied to new methods of sonic exploration. Welcome echoes of his past endeavors seep into this 8.7 starbound flight even as it steers toward a bright future. 8-7.gif
