"Back To School"If you were to return to school, what classes would you enroll in and why? |
|
There's no "if". I still take classes - language classes - French and German.
Why,... don't know,.. I just like to do it. There's an interesting "high"
you get in the brain when you add on a third language,.. when you're fluent
enough to read something in one language and start thinking about it in the
two other languages. It's like you're using untapped circuits. - Larry Kucharz: minimalist I studied accountancy, something which you immediately can't identify with a musician but it gave me security and trust. I always have been interested in more art-oriented classes but if I could choose again, there's a good chance I would prefer accountancy again.
The artistic freedom has always been a main part in my music and what I
studied never stopped supporting my music and my goal as a musician to this
very day.
I could never again subject myself to other people's 'knowledge' and desire
to impart it, no matter how poorly done. So, I would never return to
school.
Computer programming, so I wouldn't be such a hack.
I always have dreams that I have to go back to college for one day, to
finish a certain class or exam that I missed. And of course in those
dreams, they always ask me to answer impossible questions, and they end up
revoking my degree. So I guess that sort of scenario is possible...
Hmm, there's so much to choose from...I think some combination of the
very concrete (physical science, electronics, carpentry) and the very
abstract (philosophy, history [I was a history major as an
undergraduate]). I'd like to be able to do more in terms of building
things, whether musical instruments or houses, but I also derive so much
joy and inspiration from philosophical ponderings and conversations that
I always want to discover more in that realm. Mainly I just enjoy
learning, and I'll keep doing that whether I sign up for classes or
not...
I would like to go back to college and take foreign language courses.
Because I like reading, and finding different views is interesting.
So foreign language is a tool to find new wisdom.
Even one foreign word shows me the origin and background in a historical
sense. That is the thing I can't find through thinking in Japanese.
And also I want to go to Kyoto University (while it's very hard to enter)
and feel tradition and idea in everything I watch and listen there.
I am actually starting to jump through the Grad School hoops right now! I'm looking at the Ethnomusicology program at Wesleyan University in Connecticut--they've got a good reputation for world music and composition--and I'm also thinking about applying to the University of Maryland for Ethnomusicology as well. If I go there, I may have a shot at working for Smithsonian Folkways or the Library of Congress. I'd be taking the basic courses and then perhaps concentrating on Celtic or Scandinavian music. Music of the Middle East also appeals to me, especially that of Morocco. Why do I want to go back to school? Because I feel a need to explore things a bit more deeply than I am able to right now. And perhaps it will lead somewhere. I don't want to be working at some mindless job for the rest of my life when I could be wandering around the world with a tape recorder and an open mind. I'd also be happy teaching--I'd be getting paid to talk about music!
But if I didn't have to focus on just one subject, I'd also want to take
classes in Jungian Psychology, The History of the Bible, Gnosticism, The
Works of Beethoven, Flying Saucer Mythology, Yoga and Meditation,
Anthropology, Industrial Archaelogy, and Film Scoring.
I would probably enroll in all the classes I didn't take my first time
around in college- a lot of my personal interests revolve around astronomy
and ancient Sumerian mythology, so probably classes involving both of those
subjects. I'd also like to take a few cooking classes, as well as some
advanced level marketing classes- I'd sign up for just about anything that
sounded interesting!
