Musical Nature:

something other than conscious thought

(Musical Nature - 2001)

Musical Nature's slowly swirling soundmurk of something other than conscious thought definitely lends itself toward something other than conscious listening... i.e. it's quite suitable for ambient immersions. Shapelessly expansive watercolor scenes for your ears, courtesy of Geoff Varosky...

Three long panoramas of muted musicality simply drift in this 49-minute release. A continual stream of unidentifiable atmospheres stream by in 1 (17:24); marked by occasional ripples of light and dark, slightly mechanical essences blur into (and out of) more tonal drones. Billowing on various planes, the dense, slowly-moving floes of 2 are speckled with fine grit and sporadic bits of rhythmic chatter.

Almost-flatlined waves hover in barely perceptible pulsations as 3 (15:35) seems to fade in right where the previous piece faded out; similar glitchy ruffles dapple the latter moments of this gray, dreamlike ebb-and-flow.

Staying with the watercolor analogy, if you smear a few subdued colors in long streaks on a dampened page then stare into the results, you'll start to see almost-familiar patterns and shapes (or perhaps a muddy mess, if you're not open to such suggestions...). Such is the nature of Geoff Varosky's comfortably experimental oddities, making for a pleasantly obtuse 8.5 headful of something other than conscious thought.

The Musical Nature website reveals more about the artist and his sounds.
