Maitreya: From the Mothership

Maitreya: From the Mothership
(Council of Nine - 2000)

Maitreya makes no bones about the origins of these twelve deliciously spacey transmissions... obviously, they come directly From the Mothership. I've not heard such literally stellar recordings in some time... these percussion-free pieces are perfect soundtracks for deep space explorations, even if only through the constellations of your mind...

Gaseously billowing rumbles entwine with indecipherable voices to wormhole through Advent (2:43). Crackling thunder and ominous drones open the doors to The Inception, followed by the serene stirrings of interstellar synthstrings. The track becomes Blips with its cascading strings of blippy (of course) notes dangling above a yawning chasm of electro-orchestral power. The blips don't last long but the gorgeously expanding chords continue to ride out the electrical storm to a cataclysmic ending.

Further semi-symphonic excursions continue with Undulation (Pushing the Wave) (7:46); thrumming, rippling powers surge beneath the smoothly intersecting planes. Crashing waves (from where? the oceans of Jupiter?) begin to sweep over the final few minutes, and on into Silent Seas, which fortunately aren't silent at all... Down to earth for a brief stop in the Forest where raindrops and bird twitters are heard amongst the echoing backdrop which lights up with occasional displays from shimmering electronic audio-borealis.

I'm not sure about the gurgling space-baby sounds, but am completely sucked into the droning slipstream of The Beyond, the only track to receive rhythmic accompaniment, in the form of a clicking pattern. Twisting strands of bass tones thread intriguingly through Ambient, as bell-like tones sparkle above. Space-talking voices of both sexes are densely mixed into the opening and closing moments of Nebulae; radiating waveforms receive a tuneful sprinkling of electrobells which chime gorgeously and waver as if their soundshapes are transformed by the pull of opposing gravitational forces.

The Second Inception reprises the first, still stunning in its streaming drone-and-string, rising to a gauzey crescendo then wisping away to silence... out of which tonal sonic rays begin to probe; From the Mothership hovers in a dark void of solar winds, illuminating this deep space with a delicate, though awe-inspiring, power.

If you're longing to be swept away into other dimensions, Maitreya can teleport you out of your ordinary existence. With only a few "natural" ties to this planet, From the Mothership conducts its interplanetary travel with a much higher success rate than NASA and at a microfraction of the cost! A 9.1 for this extremely well-rendered cosmic voyage.
