(Psychotropic - 2001)

Time to hit the mean streets... multi-keyboardist kim koschka (aided and abetted by jim goetsch, her partner in crime of Demolition Squad) weaves a web of electronic noir.

bella maniera could easily be the soundtrack of some neo-crime caper on the dark streets of a dirty cybercity...

Spy-groovy bass, cool beats and action-brass combine with less-normal slurs of sound and occasionally quirky arrangements in rousing allegro vivace (drum 'n' bass for grand orchestra. Soft-spoken lyrics (of crime/brutality and love) are occasionally slipped into the similarly gritty-though-perky garcia lorca (6:06). A super-elastic lead synth wraps itself all around the quite-musical impromptu for a friend in china.

During fibonacci dub (12:44), soft electronics sprinkle down on a steadily chattering layers of drum-and-bassisms. The quite-nice panorama evolves through various scenes, winding down with a final chill-out.. The closing tracks take a jazz-esque, seemingly-improvisational detour (while retaining an edgy sense of intrigue); hip-hop beats spatter against the melting electrosymphonics and chimes of J. G. Ballard-inspired terminal beach while softer piano/harp textures with a similarly meandering M.O. flow through more-seductive (though less beat-intensive) homage a morton f. (ambiento con una frase for chamber orchestra).

bella maniera would make excellent driving music for nocturnal roadtripping down moody urban avenues, emphasizing the dangers that lurk around every corner. An 8.3 for evocative e-tunes.

The two Psychotropic discs were accidentally switched (by someone) so last month's review of
demolition squad's hit it was actually a review of Kim Koschka's bella maniera. My apologies!
