Coyote Oldman: House Made of Dawn

Stylized sonic craftsmanship with indigenous Native American instruments and sounds has been their calling card since 1986; Barry Stramp and Michael Graham Allen are Coyote Oldman. House Made of Dawn furthers their progess along a windward trail, blending beatless primal musical sensibilities with modern processing techniques. Their efforts yield a serenely contemplative soundspace which crosses categorical borders and defies easy description.

Much more about the timeless spiritual connection between human and nature than some recreation of "Indian music", the sweetly flowing sounds of Allen's hand-crafted flutes are subtly resculptured by Stramp's digital re-processing. Percussionless Into the Vast introduces us to the 16 tracks of gently wafting flute and synth clouds which waver like the dream-inducing smoke of a medicine man's ritual fire. An extra bit of radiant shimmer spreads and rises throughout the dense columns of flutesound which are Light and Mist, a spacious vista seen during a smoooth westward expansion.

Ambient fans will detect a similarity to some of Steve Roach's electronic desert moods when the synth-glimmers of Standing on Earth begin to shine. The intertwining woodwind passages of Walk in My World flood my mind with panoramic visions of pine-covered mountains and cool valley air. When In Warm Velvet Darkness, long layers hang like clouds, some lower and flatter, others higher and more billowing. Returning Always (6:40) is a powerwash of fluid soundstreams which undulate gently in its determined course.

For more background (or if you'd like to put your lips to your very own Coyote Oldman-made flute), your first stop should be the Coyote Oldman website; then venture to their page at Hearts of Space.

House Made of Dawn dispelled any notions that I had that Coyote Oldman was merely some "new age flute duo". No disturbances here, just warm shapeless flows resulting from ancient woodwind art and modern digital technology. A 7.7 for the serenity which emanates from this dawnlit house. 7-7.gif
