| Here's the first batch of photos (the digital shots) from the Robert Rich, James Johnson & Ma Ja Le show at the Miramar Theater in Milwaukee, April 29th 2000. Click on the collage thing to the left to see the pictures enlarged and in their entirety.
It was an ambient boy's dream-come-true, hanging backstage with soundshapers of the highest magnitude... these shots are all from before or after the sets since I didn't want to be flashing during the performances. (Check back next month to see how the 35mm shots of the concert itself turned out... I've got my fingers crossed)
Chris Short appeared onstage first, beginning with exploratory guitar sounds, and later playing flute. Paul Vnuk provided a wide variety of exotic electronic percussion, then James Johnson added his synth sounds to a three way ambient jam. Be looking for their collaborative release Seed coming soon, as well as solo projects from all three artists, and more.
Robert Rich was touring the country promoting his 3-disc Humidity and rendered improvisational reflections upon those tracks as well as other, earlier sounds. Rich performed with an arsenal of flutes, and sat down at his pedal steel guitar for several pieces, emitting some truly ear-bending tones. No sleep concert this, though several folks were relaxing on the floor, including myself. The only downside to the whole evening is that too many fans obviously missed a rare chance to see live ambient music in an appealingly personal setting.
Thanks to Robert Rich, Chris Short and Paul Vnuk for putting on a great show and a special thanks to James Johnson for asking me to emcee...
