Robert Rich: Beastiary

Robert Rich: Beastiary (Release - 2001)
I usually associate Robert Rich's glurpy organic sounds with tranquil, if slightly alien (and/or earthly/exotic), atmospheres... Sure, there was Stalker, but the when the darkly animalistic aspects of Beastiary awaken and stir, they're much more alive than those creepy zones ever were... strange and exhilarating stuff. Radiation from the extra re-processing power creates mutant breeds of abstract music.

Subtle ethno-strains are woven into the gently undulating fabric of
Nesting on Cliffsides (12:45); watery tattoos pulse as breezier elements which waft above are drawn into a shimmering vortex. Gorgeous voidspaces surround in the latter moments before a gloopy morass swallows all... then seeps into
Dante's Anthropomorphic Zoo (3:05) where semirhythmic splutters are ensnared in gauzily wailing deformations.
Unknown processes transform the percussive effects of
Carapace Hides the Delicacy into an unusual, ever-shifting string over which quavering theremin-like tones warp. Unknowable chatter bubbles forth from the otherwise serene chasm of Folded Space.
Growling lows and thunderous clamor underscore the scritchy sounds of ominous
Sharpening Her Talons, while the more-subdued mantra of
Premonitions of Circular Clouds hovers in acute-yet-vague ecstasy, besparkled by dazzling textural glints.

While ostensibly similar to his previous (and always stellar) stylings,
Robert Rich muliplies the sonic alchemy quotient, determinedly transforming his sources into the almost-seen/definitely-heard occupants of Beastiary. These otherworldy expanses are filled with luscious surreality and improbable denizens earning an 8.9 for deep visitations with uncategorized new species.
Release and Rich's own amoeba.com offer glimpses into this recently discovered world.
